Maharashtra To Disqualify Women Owning Four-Wheelers From Ladki Bahin Yojana Benefits. Check Details
The scheme provides Rs 1,500 per month to women up to 65 years of age, provided their annual family income is below Rs 2.5 lakh.

The Maharashtra government has decided from Tuesday to identify and remove women who have received benefits under its flagship Ladki Bahin Yojana while owning a four-wheeler.
The scheme provides Rs 1,500 per month to women up to 65 years of age, provided their annual family income is below Rs 2.5 lakh. Additionally, no family member should be a government employee, the beneficiary should not own a four-wheeler, and they should not be receiving financial aid from any other government scheme.
Officials revealed that over 21 lakh women in Pune alone have availed of the scheme’s benefits. Criticising the government's move, the Congress and NCP(SP) termed it “insulting” to women and equated it to cheating.
Jamsinh Girase, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Pune Zilla Parishad, told the Indian Express, “Disqualifying them is the only action we propose to take. There will be no investigation nor will any fine be levied on them.”
He added that officials would not conduct house-to-house verification and instead rely on a list provided by the RTO, which is expected to be compiled within a month.
Women Expresses Concern
Meanwhile, a woman from Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Indrayani Nagar expressed concern, explaining that while she owns a four-wheeler, it was purchased a decade ago when she was employed. “I lost my job more than three years back. I don’t get any salary. But I have a four-wheeler which was bought when I was working 10 years back. What do I do?” she asked.
In response, Girase said, “As per government directives, if there is a four-wheeler in the name of the individual they stand to be disqualified.”
As per Indian Express, Pune City Congress spokesperson Gopal Tiwari also labelled the government's action as “inhuman” and “insulting” to women. He mentioned that some women might possess a car. Many purchased them prior to the Covid-19 outbreak. During the Covid period, numerous individuals in Pune lost their employment, leaving them unable to meet their loan repayments.
Tiwari added that some are still jobless even now. If someone in this situation still has a car but no job, would the government deem them ineligible? This merely highlights the government's harsh and disrespectful stance towards women.
Mahesh Tapase, Nationalist Congress Party (SP) spokesperson stated, “I want to reiterate that such an action will be like cheating the womenfolk of Maharashtra outright. First, the Mahayuti government lured women’s votes by offering them monthly assistance, now when it has come to power, they want to deprive women of the benefit. This is nothing but cheating in broad daylight.”
